Up To Date’s Indie, Foreign & Doc Critics’ ‘Three to See,’ December 9-11

Amazon Studios

Mother Nature spoiled us with a warm November, but Old Man Winter is making us pay this week! Up To Date's indie, foreign and documentary film critics have suggestions on what to watch that will make you brave the cold winds to reach the comfort of a movie theater.

Cynthia Haines

Moonlight, R

  • The story of a young black man struggling to find and accept himself while growing up in a rough neighborhood in Miami.

Manchester by the Sea, R

  • Lee Chandler (portrayed by Casey Affleck) is appointed guardian of his nephew after the death of his only sibling. The tragedy only brings up more pain from his past relationship with ex-wife Randi (Michelle Williams) in this melancholy drama.

Eagle Huntress, G

  • A documentary detailing the harrowing quest of a young Mongolian girl who trains to become the first female eagle hunter in her country.

Steve Walker

Manchester by the Sea, R

  • Kenneth Lonergan's keenly felt script and sensitive direction are bolstered by Casey Affleck's devastating performance as a man whose sealed-off grief finds pockets of air after he becomes his teenage nephew's guardian.

Miss Sloane, R

  • Rapid-fire dialogue pumps energy into the amoral morass where D.C. lobbyists, headed up by Jessica Chastain as the title character, grease the palms of willingly corruptible elected officials.

Evolution, Not Rated

  • Effectively creepy mood piece set in a strange, seaside compound populated by pre-pubescent boys and their strange, dead-eyed caretakers.
Since 1998, Steve Walker has contributed stories and interviews about theater, visual arts, and music as an arts reporter at KCUR. He's also one of Up to Date's regular trio of critics who discuss the latest in art, independent and documentary films playing on area screens.
