While the Kansas City city council held off on decisions on a daytime curfew and putting a no nukes petition initiative on the ballot, it had no difficulty deciding that rejuvenation is needed in the central city.
The council passed resolutions and zoning ordinances to allow a commercial/residential development north of 40th Street from Central to Broadway.
Bob Mayer, capital adviser to the developers, says the project will do away with two former nightclubs and a payday loan shop, and will include three restaurants that don't serve alcohol. Mayer commented, "They'll be available for family entertainment, and that's creating a different kind of tone – a balanced tone in Westport – that I think will be very positive for our community."
The council also endorsed $600,000 in tax increment financing for a project at 39th and Prospect that will bring that area a grocery store.
