Brownback's Administration Awards Medicaid Contracts

Governor Sam Brownback's administration today awarded contracts to three companies that will manage parts of the state's new Medicaid program, called KanCare.

The administration selected Amerigroup Kansas, Sunflower State Health Plan, and United Healthcare of the Midwest, all subsidiaries of out-of-state health insurance companies.

The companies will run managed care programs for many people enrolled in Medicaid. The goal is saving money without hurting patient care.

Medicaid is one of the single largest items in the state budget, at nearly $3 Billion. More than 300,000 aged, disabled and low-income Kansans receive healthcare through Medicaid.

The managed care programs will begin in January 2013.
