Area Nerds Unite: Nerd Nite KC Features Melissa Lenos On Vampire Boyfriends
It’s like the Discovery Channel with booze, and where whiskey meets wisdom.
Every third Wednesday of the month area nerds unite at Minibar on Broadway Blvd. to listen to various presentations about nerdy topics; from how to raise silkworms to the healing powers of Jin Shin Jyutsu. And in the spirit of Halloween, we hear a talk given by Melissa Lenos who teaches English at Donnelly College about the vampire boyfriend characters that suck blood and drain souls of their partners.
Jason Kovac and Alison Heryer started the Kansas City chapter in April, but Nerd Nite talks happen all around the world, as far away as Liberia and as close as Lawrence, Kansas. They originated in the Boston area in 2003.
Melissa Lenos’ presentation is from KC’s 4th Nerd Nite which was last July. Melissa’s primary research areas include narratology and Hollywood, with a focus on film remakes. In this presentation about vampire boyfriends Melissa talks about how the character trope of the vampire has evolved over time and what it says about our culture. She talks about the evolution of this trope from Bram Stoker’s Dracula to Buffy The Vampire Slayer and The Twilight Series.

Nerd Nite is the 3rd Wednesday of the month at Minibar
