Maria Carter grew up in a small town in the Missouri Ozarks.  She graduated from Reed College in Portland, Oregon with a degree in economics.  After a year off, she returned to her home state to study journalism at the University of Missouri, receiving her Master’s degree in 2004.  Maria started working at KCUR as an intern and was later hired as a general assignment reporter.  She covers local politics and anything else happening in the Kansas City area.  In 2006, she spent a month in northern Louisiana, lending a hand at the local public radio station and covering the thousands of evacuees temporarily in the area.

Obama Defends Patriotism and Dissent in Independence

Independence, MO – Hundreds of people turned out to see Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama Monday morning in Independence. KCUR's Maria Carter was there.

Senator Obama has been plagued by detractors who've questioned his commitment to the country, but Obama fired back today with a 30 minute speech outlining his views on patriotism.

Bus Tax Draws Critics and Supporters

Kansas City, MO – Kansas City voters are being asked to extend a 3/8th cent sales tax for the bus system. The current tax brings in some 23 million dollars a year and will expire in March of next year. Supporters say the 15
year extension is crucial to keeping the bus system running, but some critics say transit officials need to come up with a combined light rail and bus plan to take to voters. KCUR's Maria Carter reports.
