KCUR Reporting Fellow, Guns & America


KCUR 89.3 seeks an exceptionally creative, ambitious Reporting Fellow to work in the station’s newsroom as part of Guns & America, a groundbreaking new collaborative reporting project focused on the role of guns in American life. The Reporting Fellow will participate as a member of the inaugural cohort of the two-year Audion Fellowship, a first-of-its-kind professional development opportunity for early- to mid-career journalists designed to grow and strengthen public media’s pool of talented, cross-platform journalists.

The Audion Fellow at KCUR will build a new beat reporting on the many ways we interact with guns, creating empathetic, surprising journalism about this divisive issue. As one of 10 Audion Fellows reporting for the Guns & America collaborative from partner stations across the U.S, the KCUR Fellow will be employed by KCUR and will work every day with the Guns & America lead editing team at WAMU in Washington, D.C. As a member of the KCUR newsroom, the Fellow will also work with KCUR’s editorial leadership team.

In addition to a full-time salary and benefits at KCUR, the highly competitive Audion Fellowship offers cutting-edge training on digital innovation, investigative reporting techniques and audio storytelling. Fellows will also come together for twice-yearly, week-long professional development seminars, to be held in various cities throughout the country.   • (35%) Develop and own a new beat reporting on the role of guns in American life. Regularly create engaging multimedia stories from reporting, interviews, data and analysis. Bring a distinctive style and approach and find new ways to report on an old issue, striving for greatest impact with deepest substance.
  • (20%) Work as part of a team to build expertise, contribute compelling story ideas, experiment with innovative storytelling techniques, and work with WAMU’s lead editing team to create a new project from the ground up.
  • (15%) Create and tend a community around the beat, both locally and nationally. Participate in both real-life and social media events.
  • (10%) Engage in innovative professional development experiences developed by the Audion Fellowship, including twice-yearly week-long meetups, monthly seminars and embed opportunities.
  • (20%) Contribute content and perspective to KCUR’s local talk shows, new stories, community outreach, and events. Also, other duties as assigned.


Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field required; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; and at least 3 years of experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.


  • At least three years of professional journalism experience, exemplary journalistic ethics, and proven research, writing, and reporting skills.
  • Graduate degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Ability to commit to two years with KCUR, starting on or about August 1, 2018, to focus on reporting on guns.
  • Ability to participate in professional development opportunities organized by WAMU.
  • Experience building a beat, developing topical expertise and bringing a fresh perspective to vital issues, prioritizing impact.
  • Willingness to experiment with storytelling methods and to adapt to changing platforms and audience needs.
  • Agility to shift journalistic modes quickly and nimbly: from deadline reporting to developing explainers; from deep investigative work to producing live events.
  • Ability to work within a diverse team with varying perspectives, ideas and life experience.
  • Experience building audiences and communities online, and using connections made within an online community for reporting.
  • A commitment to cooperation, teamwork, curiosity, and diversity.
  • Knowledge of the Midwest.
  • Experience with one or more of the following: multimedia production, particularly photography or video; hands-on audio editing and innovative audio storytelling; working with one or more content management systems; other relevant technical expertise.


Salary is commensurate with experience.
