Afternoon Announcer

Laurie Arbore became KCUR’s Afternoon Announcer in late 2013 and loves working at her favorite radio station! Prior to joining our full-time air-staff, she worked for KCUR as a part-time announcer and producer of “Cyprus Avenue.” 

Known to Kansas City audiences for both onstage and on-air work, Laurie started in radio while completing her Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance.   She hosted Afternoon Drive, plus the popular “Classical Brunch” show, at the former Classical 96.5 KXTR.  By night, Laurie sang a number of productions on the Artist Roster of the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and was a regular performer in Musical Theater Heritage shows.  By day, she caught ‘the radio bug’ and went on to hold Morning Co-Host and Midday Host positions in the alternative, AC, pop and country formats.  Her most fond memories from each station are the times spent working at philanthropic events and meeting listeners throughout the community.

Laurie has interviewed such celebrities as Ron Howard, Will Farrell, Gwyneth Paltrow, Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley, Dick Clark, Ricky Martin, Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton, Rascal Flatts and many others.  But her self-proclaimed ‘Sci-Fi Nerd’ side will always count Mark Hamill and Jonathan Frakes among the favorite interviews she’s done.  Along the way, Laurie spent four years as Media Relations Manager for Kansas City Repertory Theatre.  In addition to drumming up TV and radio publicity for Rep productions, she coordinated local interviews for Lily Tomlin, August Wilson and Lynn Redgrave during their Rep engagements.  Laurie also spent a year producing for the “A Night on the Town” Radio Series, a nationally-syndicated program celebrating the American Musical.

Laurie continues to sing whenever possible.  She has recorded with jazz pianist Wayne Hawkins, been a Dickens Caroler during the holidays, and has sung at sports events for the Kansas City Royals, Kansas City T-Bones, Professional Bull Riders National Tour and others.  Laurie has sung jingles and parody songs, and done hundreds of voiceovers.  She has twice won First Place honors from The Missouri Broadcasters Association, for co-voicing the winning radio spots, and was the opera-singing grocery clerk in an OMNI Award-winning TV campaign for the Lyric Opera of Kansas City.  

You may have seen Laurie as a Guest Co-Host on Kansas City Public Television, where she has volunteered for over a decade.  In her spare time, she plays the piano, makes jewelry, and enjoys movies, gardening and road-trips.

This past summer on Cyprus Avenue, Bill Shapiro put the spotlight on the documentary film 20 Feet from Stardom, a celebration of outstanding musicians who rarely receive recognition:  the back-up singers.  Included on the show were portions of the film's soundtrack, plus other recordings by the artists featured in the film.  Since then, 20 Feet from Stardom has been nominated for an Oscar, so we bring you a special encore of that show.
